Status of Residence is a necessary lawful status in order to stay in Japan and conduct specific activities.
Status of Residence (Resident Status) is a lawful status for a foreign national in order to work in Japan, attend schools, or make an ordinary living.
This status is a matter of extreme importance that a foreign national without a Status is not permitted to stay and make living or other activities in Japan.
There are twenty seven (27) classifications in Status of Residence.
It is constituted by law of Japan that there are twenty seven (27) classifications being ordained as Status of Residence.
Attribution of each classification varies. Depending on classification of a Status of Residence, it permits you to work, prohibits to work, or no limitation in activities at all.
As an example, if classification is "Intra-company Transferee", "Artist", "Religious Activities", or "Engineer", it permits you to work in Japan.
In contrast, if classification is "Short term stay", "College Student", "Trainee", or "Dependent", it prohibits, in principle, to work in Japan.

Other classifications such as "Permanent Resident", "Long Term Resident" do not have any limitation over activity such as working in Japan.
"Permanent Resident" resident status enables you to live almost the same as a Japanese national.
Out of the twenty seven (27) classifications of Status of Residence, "Permanent Resident" Resident Status enables you to live freely almost the same as Japanese nationals.
"Permanent Resident" is one of the Status of Residence of a foreign national who was granted the "Permission for Permanent Residence" by Minister of Justice of Japan.
In order to obtain this "Permanent Resident" Resident Status, the process inevitably demands further requirements that are more stringent than to obtain other classifications of Status of Residence.
